A Candle at Verano

The premise

A year after the wedding week that decided her life one way or another, the chapel past the vine rows stands open at last: Father Saverio has called the first memorial mass ever said for the estate's first mistress, and he has asked Bianca Moretti to be there when it begins. One hour before the bells, one candle to carry, and Rafael Costa at the chapel door with a year of his own to account for. A vignette continuation of The Vows at Verano.

Two endings to reach — where the thread leads is yours to decide.

Past him, at the chapel door, stands Rafael Costa — black-dressed, bareheaded, his mother's missal unopened in one hand. The year past stands on the path like a third guest. …
